This House is Haunted by John Boyne is a thrilling ghost story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
~~~~Some Spoilers Ahead!~~~~
This House is Haunted follows the story of Eliza Caine, a 21-year-old woman who has just become an orphan. After finding out that her home wasn’t hers to keep, she decides on a whim to leave London and head to Norfolk to take up a position as a governess. She doesn’t know anyone in Norfolk, and the advertisement for governess was vague and lacked much of the information needed, but Eliza took it anyway, quitting her job as a teacher and leaving London. She never knew what dangers a seemingly ordinary position would hold for her. Eliza found herself in charge of two children; Isabella and Eustace, with no other adults in sight. She was suspicious about the children being left alone and made it her duty to take care of them. Her adventures began that very night, and Eliza’s suspicions about the house grew. As the days passed, Eliza realized that her suspicions could not be denied any longer.
There was a ghost in the house, and it wanted her blood.
I found this book to be one of the best stories that I have read in a while! It kept you on the edge of your seat and you watched, helpless, as Eliza faced several dangers, some of them nearly costing her life. You feel every emotion imaginable; from terror when Eliza first meets the spirit, to utter frustration as her attempts to solve the mystery are blocked by the locals. There are many twists and turns to this ghostly tale, and each turn of the page sends you spiraling deeper into the story.
I haven’t read many books written in Dickinson prose, and I must say that it is very well done! Every word had a meaning and every character had a point. The setting and atmosphere was so clearly defined that you felt like you were wandering the house right alongside Eliza.
I give this book a 5 of 5, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good ghost story! I couldn’t put it down, and I bet you won’t be able to either!
