Base Instinct by Fallen Kittie is a good rendition of a classic scenario.
~~~~Some Spoilers Ahead!~~~~
Melissa Black was always one to follow the rules. Coming from an accomplished military family, she had little choice but to map out her future exactly as her family expected. But when Kingsley Hastings comes back into her life unexpectedly, Melissa discovers that you can’t plan for everything; especially where the heart is concerned. But can she overcome her pride and allow the man of her dreams to prove his love, or will she remain the soldier made of stone? One thing is for sure; Kingsley has his work cut out for him.
As far as romances go, this one was pretty good. The two main characters had great chemistry and revealing emotions; the sex scenes were tastefully done, and the settings were well described. The dialogue was constructive to the overall story, and you could really feel the struggle between the two main characters as they explored their past and looked to their future.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I honestly felt that it was a little too cliched, but that’s my personal preference. The story itself was a good rendition of a classic scenario, and there were some genuine parts that I enjoyed, but there’s potential there that wasn’t explored. Since it’s the first book in a series, I’m hopeful that the other books reveal some of that potential.
I give it a 3 of 5 for it’s dynamic main characters and engaging dialogue, and if you’re a fan of classic romances with tons of sex and drama, then Base Instinct is the book for you!
