Beyond the Pale by Michelle McCarty is an emotion-filled tale of discovering who your family really is.
~~~~Some Spoilers Ahead!~~~~
Abigail has been through more in her young life than most go through in two lifetimes. The death of her beloved father, a teen pregnancy, estrangement from her family, and divorce from her gambling husband has left her tough and sarcastic. When she moves into the White Oaks Trailer Park, she bonds instantly with the park manager, Violet, and manages to put her past behind her while embracing the colorful life that the trailer park community brings. But when her mother dies some years later, Abbie and her son, Mick, are forced back to her hometown so she can claim the items her father left her. While there, she realizes that her family isn’t at all what it seems, and a carefully guarded family secret begins to unravel before their eyes.
I don’t even know where to begin. This book captured my attention from the very beginning, and it was a balanced mix of humor, drama, and intrigue. Emotions flowed from every page during this very personal story of discovery. The characters were dynamic and had amazing chemistry, the settings were well described, and the dialogue was engaging. The ending really rounded the story out, and it was so perfect that I almost cried.
I did find a few technical flaws, such as quotation marks where they shouldn’t have been and a few colorful punctuations that seemed to be leftover from editing, but they didn’t take away from the reading experience in any way.
I give Beyond the Pale a solid 5 of 5. It was a raw, emotional story about family, friends, and the realization that sometimes, you find your family in the most unlikely of places.
